HAPPY NEW YEAR
A belated Happy New Year to everyone! Thank you from all the doctors, nurses and staff for the very generous Christmas gifts of eatables, drinkables and pampering items. All very much appreciated.
We have had several important staff changes. Welcome to Miss Weiwei Mao who is the new Practice Manager for both practices. Also, Dr Hemel Shah and Dr Hasmeet Khambay are the new salaried GP’s for Willow Practice. Reshma Patel is a new Office Manager and two of our senior receptionists have been promoted to office managers; Elizabeth Clarke and Harriet Dowden. Dr Becky Smith, who works for both practices, is on maternity leave and we are delighted to announce that she had a baby girl and all is going well. We have Dr Catherine Lewis back to cover at Kingfisher and Dr Bharte Bagga is covering, as she did last time, for Willow.
HEALTH CENTRE CHANGES
Over the last few months, along with Redwood Practice, we have been following the “Productive General Practice” scheme working towards improved efficiencies in the practices.
Changes have included setting up a new “call centre” away from the front desk. This will be good from the confidential point of view, enabling staff to concentrate on the person in front of them, or the phone, avoiding having to multi-task. Please always use the automatic check in screen if you can, this should ease pressure at reception at busy times. The new phone system will have a call waiting function.
To make sure that care is prioritised, patients are now being asked if they mind saying the reason for their appointment. This is to check they see the right person at the right time, and that it isn’t a problem that can be dealt with by admin staff, a phone call with a GP, a nurse or a trip to the local pharmacist, who can offer treatment for minor ailments and general advice. We understand if you do not wish to say why you want an appointment and this will be respected.
Patient Online Access Service Registration, enabling you to book appointments and repeat prescriptions is convenient, saving you time as well as that of doctors and admin staff.
There is a national programme called “Prescribing Wisely”. From 1st Feb 2019, we no longer accept prescription requests from pharmacies. We would like you to request your medicines directly with the Kingfisher or Willow Practice by dropping your repeat slip into the Practice prescription box or via the Patient Online Access Service.
END OF YEAR
31st March is near, and we have the annual task of doing our best to ensure all those of you with conditions requiring “monitoring” have had all their “boxes ticked”. This hopefully happens throughout the year, but we always end up doing a lot of chasing. Please respond to texts or letters as it is important for providing best care for you. If you think there has been a mistake and you don’t need an appointment, please phone to discuss with the Doctor rather then ignoring the message.
There has been quite an upsurge in incidences of “flu” and “flu-like” illness; we still have vaccines available for at risk groups. The uptake of the childhood nasal flu vaccine is still low. Please book in with one of our Nurses or Health Care Assistants.
While on the topic of vaccines Measles cases in Europe tripled from 2017 to 2018. More than 80,000 people in 47 of the 53 European countries contracted Measles in 2018, with 61% hospitalised and 72 deaths. Some of us are old enough to remember seeing cases of encephalitis, and, although less serious, debilitating chest or hearing problems following infection. The only safe way to protect your child is 2 doses of MMR. Thankfully our rates are pretty good but don’t rely on “everyone else” for herd immunity. Young adults who remain unprotected are especially at risk from travelling, and can become just as unwell as younger ones.
PATIENT PARTICIPATION GROUP
The PPG will hold their AGM at 7pm on the 13th March at Maswell Park Health Centre. We have vacancies for Kingfisher Practice representatives on the committee which meets bi-monthly on a Saturday morning from 10-11.30am and also volunteers. If you are interested, please contact the Practice PPG Chair, Mr David Loftus MBE (email@example.com) The PPG has a Facebook Closed Group, which you are welcome to join. This can be found by searching Maswell Park Patient Participation Group on the Facebook page(https://www.facebook.com/groups/199227350740142/) Please help us to promote the PPG health events and activities via text messaging by having your consent to do so.
WONDER DRUG FOR THE NEW YEAR
If we told you that there’s a great drug that improves high blood pressure, diabetes, chronic lung conditions, anxiety and depression, AND has no side effects, wouldn’t you want to try it? You’ve guessed – its Physical Activity! You don’t have to join a gym or run a marathon, just doing something more than you are doing now is a good start. Look at the info for help and support. You could join our Saturday Health Walks for example. Please ask at reception for more information.
We are always happy for patients to see us who think they are struggling with their mental health or emotional wellbeing. It’s better to see us early than let the problems escalate. We are however very fortunate that patients can self-refer to a variety of different therapy options, including on-line support. Please see the link.
